The Rise of White Arabism

Michael Totten just posted a large excerpt from an article printed in the Lebanese Daily Star that I have had in my drafts since early yesterday. I guess great minds think a like. I haven’t put anything together on it but I’d encourage you to read Totten’s post.

Things seem to be changing hourly in Lebanon; good news followed by bad news followed by good news, followed by indeterminate news. Other projects plus the flu are taking up my time; though I’m reading I, won’t be posting for several days. We’re witnessing history here folks, keep your eyes open.

I think right now the bad news is in the ascendency. Hopefully this gets resolved without another civil war.

As always, the Daily Show takes analysis to a new level.

I think I watched these videos a few days late. The fitty cents stuff was funny, but the DS appeared overly cynical, especially given recent developments.

1.3 million out for pro-independence. When are we going to start seeing protests that exceed the population of the country? (especially weird when you calculate in the overwhelmingly maleness of the hezbollah demonstration).

It seems like the international pressure is affecting Syria and Hezbollah is going to have to back down; the sectarian/pro-Syria hand is looking weaker and weaker.

The more the Iraeli/Palestinian peace process progresses the less releveant Hezzbollah becomes as a militia in Lebanon. It seems like there is an opening for Hezbollah to try to maintian their prestige by fomenting violence on the northern border with Irsael, but even if they try this, I can’t see it washing well with the rest of Lebanon in today’s climate.
