I have sometimes struggled with exactly what Google’s business model is. Obviously online advertising is how they generate revenue but even their focus stated as “improving the ways people connect with information” usually leaves me wondering just how they’re going to make money with some of their products. Lately, I’ve ended up settling on the assumption that they probably don’t know what their going to do with some of their innovations, they just throw it out into the market and let natural selection take over. If it survives, then begins the process of figuring out how to make money with it.
I’m betting that they may never turn google news into a money maker and will end up calling it a successful branding exercise and demontration of technology.
