Debunking the 100,000 dead number

The “100,000 dead from Iraq invasion” meme has already begun to be repeated endlessly. Fred Kaplan at Slate demonstrates the flaws in the study that started it all.

I think that Kaplan’s high end estimate of “30,000 killed” is just as flawed as the Lancet figure, only in the opposite direction. This week’s Economist provides a far more balanced assesment of the Lancet study than Kaplan does (Nov. 6 print edition). Kaplan’s right in one sense, though, in that this may all be besides the point. Regardless of who’s figures are right, both 30,000 or 100,000 dead civilians is a disaster of criminal proportions.
